Chapter Eight
âYou got moved to ice magic in your first year?â
âYep.â
âThatâs pretty impressive. I havenât heard about any first years getting accepted into that.â
Corbin set his cup down and leaned forward before asking, âHow mad was Xavier?â
âHe was fuming,â I cackled.
âGood,â Corbin smiled. âBe careful around him, though. I wouldnât put it past him to try and sabotage you or even try to get you expelled.â
âWhy would he do that?â I know heâs an ass, but that seems a little extreme.
âHe has some obsession with being the best at everything he does. Childhood trauma? Who knows? Iâve seen him go to great lengths to ensure heâs number one in all of his classes, that one will be no different.â
I snorted, âYeah, like Iâd be number one in any class.â
âYouâre probably the first first year to get into ice magic,â Corbin said stoically. âThat definitely means something.â
Something not good, Iâm sure. The other shoe will drop, eventually.
The only other group of students in the cafeteria gathered up their stuff and headed for the door when a slender figure in a black cloak came into the room. Her hood was pulled up, but I could see auburn hair poking out of the shadows.
âOne necromancer in the room was almost too much,â one guy in the other group muttered as they passed our table and headed out the door.
The slender figure approached us quickly, taking long graceful strides and plopped down ungracefully beside me, spreading her legs and leaning on the table with her elbows.
âHey Corbin,â she said in a dulcet tone, not even remotely trying to hide the desire in her voice. She pulled back her hood and shook her head wildly, her hair flapping around her face before falling neatly on her shoulders. âHi Clara,â she said to me, less flirty, more friendly.
âHello Morgan,â Corbin said, his normal level voice lilting slightly.
âHey,â I replied, staring at Corbin with a grin on my face. Someone has a crush. Corbin locked eyes at me and tilted his head, giving me the âcut it outâ look.
âSo, first year in ice magic, huh? And naturally, youâre friends with Corbin who got into necromancy his second year,â Morgan said. âMore than friends?â She added, tilting her head.
âJust friends,â Corbin said a little insultingly quickly. Not that I had any further desires with him than friendship. I mean, he is nice and cute but nothing has clicked between us. Still, I wasnât a fan of how quickly he replied.
âYep,â I said.
âAh, cool, cool,â Morgan replied. It took every ounce of my willpower not to force a date between them. They both are clearly into each other. As soon as Corbin looks away from her, she stares at him and vice versa.
Silence descended on the table and after the appropriate amount of time for things to become awkward, I cleared my throat. âIâm going to go⦠study.â
âSorry, I didnât mean to interrupt your lunch. I need to go take care of some stuff anyway,â Morgan said.
âNo, no. Itâs fine, I need to brush up on some things before my next class.
